Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System
JSS3 is used because simulations that involve tens of millions of particles in a large computation domain requires parallel computing and a large amount of memory, which is not available on usual workstations.
Achievements of the Year
We are currently researching numerical models related to droplet deformation, breakup, and freezing to numerically simulate liquid fuel atomization and airfoil icing using the Moving Particle Simulation (MPS) method. This year, first, we made improvements on our surface tension and wettability model and evaluated them by solving simple problems such as oscillation of an elliptical droplet and droplet impingement on a solid wall. Second, to evaluate the aerodynamic force applied to droplet surfaces caused by external airflow, we applied the immersed solid method to airflow calculations using the finite volume method and coupled it with the MPS method. Droplet breakup was simulated to validate the method. Our research of the next year will focus on applying the above method to large-scale problems.
