Abstract

This study investigates technologies for high-speed rotorcraft. The objectives are to enhance main rotor performance and reduce airframe drag to enable high-speed flight. To improve rotor performance, CFD-based optimization and advanced insights into rotor aerodynamics are employed. For airframe drag reduction, non-streamlined components, such as the rotor hub, are examined, with the aim of developing effective drag-reduction devices.

Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System

To perform a large number of computational simulations, an efficient high-performance computer is required.

Achievements of the Year

Previously developed hub drag reduction technologies were extended to a medium-sized helicopter model to assess their effectiveness at the system level beyond component-level evaluations. A full-configuration CFD analysis was conducted to decompose the drag components, quantify the contribution of hub drag to the total drag, and identify the primary drag sources. Based on these analyses, drag reduction devices were developed, and their effectiveness was demonstrated through both CFD simulations and wind tunnel experiments.
