Abstract

The objective of this study is to predict and evaluate the aerodynamic performance of rotorcraft, including high-speed rotorcraft and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, using numerical simulations, thereby contributing to aircraft design. Performance evaluations are conducted through simulations of active technologies aimed at reducing rotor vibration and noise. In addition, aerodynamic analyses of fixed-pitch and variable-pitch rotors used in drones and eVTOL aircraft are performed, and analysis tools are developed to support these evaluations.

Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System

Accurate resolution of vortical flow around a rotor requires large-scale computational grids and therefore necessitates the use of high-performance computing resources such as supercomputers.

Achievements of the Year

The performance of active technologies and the aerodynamic performance of fixed-pitch and variable-pitch rotors were evaluated. For variable-pitch rotors (Fig. 1), comparisons with wind tunnel test results showed good agreement. Numerical simulations provided insights into the aerodynamic characteristics of variable-pitch rotors.
