Abstract

We develop parameters to be used in resampling process for homogenization of spatial resolution and center position of footprints, which are different to each channel, within Level 1 processing of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 3 (AMSR3) to be onboard the Global Observation SATellite for Greenhouse gases and Water cycle (GOSAT-GW).

Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System

Significant reduction of processing time needed to develop parameters by using parallel processes of JSS3. These parameters are constant ones in Level 1 operational processing, but a large number of CPUs is temporarily needed to produce them. Therefore, it takes extremely long time to produce them if we do same calculation in usual computer environment.

Achievements of the Year

In preparation for the public data release of the AMSR3 Level‑1 products, we have limited period for generating the resampling parameters that will be used in the Level‑1R products.

The resampling process that is required for the Level‑1R products takes approximately three hours per an execution under the computational conditions of 6 CPUs and 8 GB memories. This process must be executed independently for 243 points (observation points within a scan) across 30 cases in frequency. If the processes are executed sequentially without the use of JSS3, the total processing time is estimated to be approximately 912 days, which would far exceed the allocated period prior to the public data release scheduled 1-year after the satellite launch.

To address this issue, the processing tasks were executed in parallel using the JSS3 system. By submitting multiple jobs concurrently, all required computations were completed in approximately five days. As a result, all necessary parameters were generated within the release schedule, enabling the timely delivery of the Level‑1 products.
