Abstract

Data from the Earth observation satellite "EarthCARE," launched in May 2024, were reprocessed using improved algorithms.

These data are important because they help interpret clouds and aerosols, which affect the global atmospheric system and climate change. EarthCARE data also contribute to improving the accuracy of climate change predictions by being incorporated into numerical climate models or used to evaluate them.

Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System

Earth observation data processing includes "operational processing," performed routinely, and "reprocessing," performed every few years for all past data. A reprocessing campaign aligns with periodic algorithm version upgrades. As observation data increase, the reprocessing time for archived data increases. Using supercomputers greatly shortens computation time, enabling products to be delivered to users quickly.

Furthermore, JSS can be used as remote storage to archive master data.

Achievements of the Year

In FY2025, the improved algorithms were installed in JSS to reprocess accumulated data since the start of EarthCARE observations.

In addition, we backed up the data to J-SPACE (311 TB).

The reprocessed data are now being made available to researchers and other users via the data distribution system G-Portal.
