Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System

In research and development of elemental and system technologies for advanced engines that will be applied to future aircraft and achieve high environmental performance, it is necessary to (1) understand the flowfield around the engine, (2) evaluate the performance and optimal design the elemental technologies, and therefore CFD analysis using JSS is essential on design and evaluation with high fidelity.

Achievements of the Year

RANS analysis was performed on an open rotor engine configuration to analyze the breakdown of drag component in the rotationla direction (torgue). A a results, it was found that pressure drag is more dominant than friction drag. Then, pressure drag reduction technologies that can be applied to open rotors and is effective in reducing fuel consumption was selected.
