Abstract

To quantify the impact of riblet applications on tail wings and nacelles on drag reduction and to enable aircraft-level drag estimation that incorporates these effects.

Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System

To clarify and quantitatively evaluate the effects of favorable/adverse pressure gradients and crossflow on the drag reduction performance of riblets, large-scale direct numerical simulations of boundary-layer flows are required. Therefore, the use of the JAXA supercomputer is essential.

Achievements of the Year

The turbulent boundary layer presented in Schlatter and Orlu (2012) was accurately reproduced.
