Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System
Numerical analysis of centrifuges makes it possible to evaluate various physical properties such as local flow rates that cannot be measured in experimental systems. In these studies, large computational resources are required to reproduce the complex mechanisms of centrifuges, and the use of JSS makes it possible to perform a large number of calculations at high speed.
Achievements of the Year
In order to evaluate the liquid discharge function under microgravity conditions for the development of a centrifuge, simulations were conducted in the absence of gravitational acceleration (Fig.1). Regardless of the direction of rotation, liquid accumulating on the inner wall of the enclosure moves toward the center of the rotating blades while contacting the blades. The liquid then flows back to the inner wall of the enclosure and entrains gas.

Fig.1: Interface behavior inside the enclosure: (a) forward rotation, (b) reverse rotation (The interface is set at a liquid content of 0.5, and the color gradually fades with depth).
