Abstract

For the mountain rescue and disaster relief, the rescue plan is built based on a limited source of information, which leads the less-effective operation and a risk of secondary disasters. To solve this problem, personal flying system is developed, which carries a rescue team to the target area in advance to the main rescue operation. Gathering information and making decisions on-site contributes to the rescue plan with high reliability and effectiveness.

Reasons and benefits of using JAXA Supercomputer System

The controller of the flying system is generated by deep reinforcement learning. JAXA supercomputer system is beneficial in that it enables the multi-core calculation for the deep reinforcement learning. In addition, it is effective to submit multiple jobs at a time for the paramter study.

Achievements of the Year

Deep reinforcement learning was applied to generate a controller for 3-degree-of-freedom attitude control. The model was set in a gimbal rig and utilized thrust vectoring (Figure). Considering the full working range of attitude (euler angles), the contrller was designed based on quaternion feedback.

By incorporating the moving average as a penalty in the deep reinforcement learning, the oscillations of the control commands were suppressed and smooth and stable control was achieved. It was also found that the use of the deviation quaternions as attitude control penalties was more stable than the use of the differences of the Euler angles from the target attitude angles, and the time required for learning was also reduced. Furthermore, even when the differences of quaternions was used as penalties, the performance and learning time were comparable to those of the deviation quaternions. It should be noted that the differences of quaternions have no meaning as a physical quantity.

It is expected that the neural network can adapt to the difference between simulation and real environment by learning with the application of domain randomization, and can be controlled in experiments without tuning (to be verified by experiments).
